eSIM and MVNO platforms: what an operator actually needs

An eSIM is a SIM that is written to a device over the air instead of being a piece of plastic. That changes the operator's job from handling cards to running a continuous service.

What an eSIM is

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a chip built into a device that holds one or more operator profiles. A profile is downloaded to the device remotely, using a standard process, and can be enabled, disabled or deleted without opening the device. A customer can get service in minutes without waiting for a card.

The lifecycle an operator has to run

Roaming and plans

Travel is where eSIM is most visible. Country bundles and roaming rules decide what a customer pays abroad and what you pay your partners. Plans should be built, versioned and governed in one place, so that a price change is a controlled action.

What to look for in a controller

  • One console for the whole lifecycle, not separate portals and spreadsheets.
  • Separate roles for viewing, managing, rates, wallet, usage and reports, so staff see only what they need.
  • Live usage rather than overnight batches, so a problem is seen as it happens.
  • Audit records for money-related actions such as top-ups.
  • Questions answered from your own data, with sources shown.

How the SSONE eSIM Controller helps

The eSIM Controller is one operations console for the whole subscriber lifecycle, with a live dashboard of SIMs, subscribers, traffic and revenue, SIM inventory and lifecycle management, subscriber profiles and bindings, rate plans with country bundles and roaming policies, subscriber wallets with audited top-ups, real-time usage with anomaly alerts, and operational and commercial reports delivered on a schedule. Roles are granular, and an AI assistant answers questions from your own data with cited answers.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM?
The service is the same. A physical SIM is a card you insert, and an eSIM is a chip in the device that receives an operator profile over the air.
What is an MVNO?
A mobile virtual network operator sells mobile service under its own brand using another operator's network. It runs its own plans, customers and billing without owning the radio network.
Can one console handle rating, wallet and reporting?
That is the aim of an eSIM controller. SSONE's controller covers the lifecycle from SIM to subscriber to usage, wallet and reports in one place.
